Pool Maintenance 101

A clean, safe pool is simple to maintain. Here are some basics for caring for a backyard swimming pool.

Using Pool Shock

For a new pool, or spring start up, start by super chlorinating or “shocking” the pool.

  • Super chlorinate with 52 to 104 oz of Austin’s Pool Tech Pool Shock for each 10,000 gallons of water. Test yield to 5 to 10 ppm available chlorine by weight. When adding shock, use a feeder device or vary the location of pouring to avoid staining of liner.
  • Adjust and maintain pool water pH to 7.2 to 7.6.
  • Adjust and maintain the alkalinity of the pool to between 50 to 100 ppm.
  • To maintain the pool, add manually or by a feeder device 11 oz of Austin’s Pool Tech Pool Shock for each 10,000 gallons of water to yield an available chlorine residue between 0.6 to 1.0 ppm by weight.
  • Stabilized pools should maintain a residual of 1.0 to 1.5 ppm available chlorine.
  • Test the pH, available chlorine residual and alkalinity of the water frequently with appropriate test kits.

Frequency of testing and treatment of water will depend on temperature and number of swimmers.

Every seven days, or as necessary, super chlorinate with 52 to 104 oz of Austin’s Pool Tech Pool Shock for each 10,000 gallons of water. Test yield to 5 to 10 ppm available chlorine by weight.

Entry into treated pools is prohibited above levels of 4 ppm due to risk of bodily injury.

Using Algaecide

Before adding algaecide, backwash the filter thoroughly. Pool should have 1 – 3 ppm available chlorine by weight.

  • Vacuum algae debris and thoroughly brush the pool.
  • Add one gallon of Austin’s Pool Tech Algaecide for each 25,000 gallons of water.
  • Vacuum pool after 24 hours to remove dead algae.
  • If algae is still visible, repeat dose and vacuuming steps as necessary until pool is visibly free of algae.
  • Once algae is under control, clean filter and return to normal pool operation/maintenance.
  • To maintain the pool, add one quart of Austin’s Pool Tech Algaecide for each 25,000 gallons of water every 3 – 5 days or as needed to maintain 0.5 ppm active.
